Expressionist impasto at its most commanding in the vertical format, a thick palette-knife sun dominates the upper field, radiating irregular light, while the almond tree beneath bends under the intensity of warmth from above. The paint surface is physically present, built in layers that catch real light and cast real shadow. Every stroke is visible.

The almond blossom is the most intimate seasonal marker in the Algarvian year, the sign, in February, that winter is already ending in the south while the rest of Europe is still cold.
