A single enormous dark peony fills the canvas, petals spiraling inward from deep burgundy-wine at the outer edges through rich crimson and dark magenta toward a mysterious near-black center that pulls the eye inward like a vortex. The impasto is thick and gestural, each brushstroke catching light against the deep reds. Touches of dark plum in the deepest folds. The faintest suggestion of forest green at one corner.

Peony Rubra is the most dramatic close-up in the Botanica collection,  the dark companion to Peony Alba's white serenity.
